Volunteers from Birtley Contracting dug deep for a community project in County Durham. Operatives helped clear weeds at the Community Garden in Chester-le-Street for local charity Groundwork North East & Cumbria.
The request for help came through Durham Community Action, who were alerted to Groundwork’s need and proceeded to contact Birtley Contracting’s Senior Administrator Yvonne Thomas, who helped coordinate the team of volunteers
Between them the team managed to clear an entire van-load of weeds from the site to get it ready for planting.
John MacDougall said: “It certainly looked like it had been overgrown for some time. We just got stuck in. I even went back the next day and dropped off some guttering for the garden shed. I had some at home and they had no means of getting any water. If they get a water butt and put some guttering up it will soon fill with the amount of rain we have round here!”
Peter Samson, who is a Community Worker for Durham Community Action, said: “The guys from Tarmac made a real difference to the amount of clearing we managed to get done. “On top of that, they were great to work with and we’d have them back any day!”
